The boxer was late for the registration at the Olympia in Elis, wherefore he would be excluded from participation. He then said he was late because of contrary winds in the Cyclades. Another Alexandrian, Heracleides, proved this was a lie, as the real reason for his delay was competing and winning in games in Ionia. The enraged Apollonios put on his boxing gloves and started hitting Heracleides, for which he was fined.
He did therefore not actually compete in Olympia, but he did compete (and win, according to Heracleides' account in Pausanias).
