Comment: The inscription consists of an elegiac couplet on the base of an offering, with a third line whose metrical definition is not clear (6.1.2,6.1.3, 6.1.8, 6.1.11), which refers to four victories by Aristis, son of Pheidon of Kleonai, in the pancration. Most commentators have dated the inscription mainly by reference to the date for the foundation of the Nemea given by Eusebius/Jerome. McGregor, following Herodotus suggests that Aristis is the brother of of Leocedes, one of the suitors of Agariste, the daughter of Cleisthenes, sometime in the first third of the 6c BC (McGegor, 1941, 275-276). Meiggs and Lewis suggest that Pheidon, father of Aristis, was a descendant of the Argive royal house living in exile in Kleonai (Meiggs and Lewis, 1988, 18).
