Comment: | Pausanias (6.15.2) records that a statue of Pantarkes was dedicated by the Achaeans upon their peace-treaty with the Eleans and the release of prisoners from both sides. It has been suggested the conflict between Achaeans and Eleans took place during the early years of the reign of Demetrios II of Macedonia (239-229 BC) (Moretti 1957, no. 577). This gives us a rough date also for Pantarkes' victory in the Olympic games also recorded by Pausanias. Moretti suggests that this victory took place at the 138th Olympiad (= 228 BC). [DvdL] |
