Philumenus received a monument by emperors Valentinianus, Theodosius and Arcadius, showcasing the popularity of athletics in the 4th century AD. He is known for winning every match he entered in both the east and the west (in omni athletico certamine ab oriente ad occidente), and being stronger than bronze, as it was 'much weaker than his hand' ‘Het brons is vele malen zwakker dan mijn hand’ (Χαλκὸς ἐμῆς χειρος πολλὸν ἀφαυρότερος) (Gouw).
He is also an accomplished boxer.
