Comment: | The story goes Kleomedes was victorious but killed his opponent Ikkos of Epidauros and was convicted by the umpires of foul play and he was deprived of the prize. Upon return in Astipalaia, he smashed a pillar of a school which collapsed upon about sixty children. He took refuge in the sanctuary of Athens hiding in a chest, until his fellow-citizens opened the chest but could not find him, dead or alive. When they asked the oracle of Delphi, she said: Kleomedes is one of the last heroes. Thereafter, he was honoured as a hero in Astipalaia. |
