Comment: | The statue of Protolaos was made by Pythagoras of Rhegium. This sculptor was active mostly after 480 BC, according to Moretti (1957, no. 256; but see entry no. 145: 484 BC?). Hence, the estimated date of Protolaos' Olympic victory. As several of the victors in boys' boxing contests are attributed by Moretti to other Olympiads between 480 and 448 BC, he suggests either the 79th or 80th Olympiad (= 464 and 460 BC). He favours the former. |
