Comment: | Bykelos was the first of the Sikyonians to win the boys' boxing-match at the Olympic games. His statue was made by Kanachos (II) of Sikyon, pupil of Polykleitos of Argos. Pliny the Elder (N.H. 34.19) places the heydays of this Kanachos in the 95th Olympiad (ca. 400 BC). Hence, our approximate dating. Moretti 1957, no. 370 suggests the 96th Olympiad (= 396 BC). (Moretti gives Paus. 6.13.6 instead of 6.13.7) |
