Comment: In Pausanias' account of the boxing match at the Nemea between Kreugas of Epidamnus and Damoxenos of Syracuse , the onset of night leads the contestants to agree to conduct their match in some formal manner, each apparently allowing the other to strike his blow unimpeded. Damoxenos strikes Kreugas, his stiffened fingers puncturing Kreugas' side, and then pulls out Kreugas' entrails, so as to cause Kreugas' instantaneous death. In hitting his opponent in this way, however, Damoxenos has in some way violated the agreement made previously. The Argives thereupon expel Damoxenos, posthumously award Kreugas the victory. An account was erected in honour of Kreugas by the Argeians in the sanctuary of Apollo Lykios at Argos .
