The inscription on the statue base set up by the people of Klazomenai tells us Herodotos was the first citizen of Klazomenia to win at the Olympia (Paus. 6.17.2). The first Ionian victory at an Olympian festival (probably Antipatros from Miletos, 98th Olympiad = 388 BC; see Moretti (1957), no. 385) was in 388 BC, providing a terminus post quem. The statue of Herodotos was surrounded by other statues, mostly dating to the 4th century BC. Moretti (1957), no. 528 suggests Herodotos' victory to have taken place at the 122nd Olympiad (=292 BC).
