Lichas was the son of Arkesilaos (see
entry no. 238). At the 90th Olympiad, the Spartans were excluded from the Olympic games. Lichas therefore joined the contests in name of the Boeotians (Thucydides) or Thebans (Pausanias). Yet, he placed the garland on the victorious chariot, to show the chariot was his own. After Sparta and Elis had made peace (i.e. after 400 BC), Lichas had a statue erected in Olympia, but the official lists of victors continued to register the victory as one of the Boeotians/Thebans (Pausanias 6.2.3).
