Lichas was the son of Arkesilaos (see entry no. 238). At the 90th Olympiad, the Spartans were excluded from the Olympic games. Lichas therefore joined the contests in name of the Boeotians (Thucydides) or Thebans (Pausanias). Yet, he placed the garland on the victorious chariot, to show the chariot was his own. He was then disqualified; one of the causes for the later Spartan-Eleian war of 400 BC. After Sparta and Elis had made peace, Lichas had a statue erected in Olympia, but the official lists of victors continued to register the victory as one of the Boeotians/Thebans (Pausanias 6.2.3). He was one of the three archons of Thasos in 398/397 BC.
