Comment: | Pausanias (6.16.8) mentions the victory and statue of Pyttalos. The sculptor was Sthennis from Olynthos. See also Choirilos (ID 1090 in this database). Moretti (1957), no. 476 notes that he probably lived from ca. 350 BC to at least 287-281 BC when he acquired Athenian and Attic citizenship (if indeed he is the Sthennis mentioned in IG VII 279 = I.Oropos 383). Pyttalos' victory therefore probably took place some time during the last quarter of the fourth century BC and the first quarter of the third. Moretti suggests the 115th Olympiad (= 320 BC). [DvdL] |
