Comment: | Pausanias (6.17.4) mentions the statue base of Enation, which did not mention his place of origin but did identify Enation as Arcadian. Due to the rarity of the name, Moretti (1957), no. 576 suggests we can identify this person with a certain Emaution from Thelpousa mentioned in a fragmented inscription dating to after 228 BC (IG IV(2), 72, l. 28). He, therefore, accepts the name as Emaution and the place of origin as Thelpousa. We follow him. This inscription also provides us with an estimated date range for Emaution's victory: (2nd half of 3rd century BC). [DvdL] |
