Comment: | Pausanias narrates the story of how Pheidolas was thrown off his horse at the start of the game. The horse without rider managed to win the race still, and the Eleans decided to crown Pheidolas nonetheless as victory. The date of his victory is not noted; Moretti 1957, no. 147 assumes that this victory took place in the Olympiad preceeding the one in which the sons of Pheidolas were the victors, as he believes Pheidolas and his sons rode the same horse. However, Pausanias (6.13.9-10) gives different names for the horse of Pheidolas (Aura) and that of his sons (Lycus). |
