Comment: | The statue of Symmachos was made by Alypos of Sikyon. This sculptor made several statues of athletic victors and also worked on the victory monument of the Spartans at Delphi, celebrating their victory in the battle of Aegospotami (405 BC). Hence, an estimated date can be given around the turn of century. Moretti 1957, no. 353 suggests the 94th Olympiad (= 404 BC). Moretti 1957, no. 353 records Symmachos as victor in the pale-contest. But we may read Pausanias equally in such a way that he won the boys' pale-contest. |
