Comment: | The man came from a prominent family, see SEG entry. SEG and Gouw both suggest that the man's name was Antonius Asklepiades, but I wonder whether Asklepiades might rather be his father's name. Asklepiades Olympic victory became more impressive by winning 'without hitting the floor' (ἄπτως), 'without being grappled by an opponent' (ἀμεσολάβητος), and 'without receivin a bye' (ἀνεφεδρος). Gouw puts him as the son of a prominent family who resigned his athletic career to get into politics (Gouw). |
