Comment: | On the stele, the man is pictured as an athlete, together with his dog (perhaps named 'Paregoris', but Robinson interprets this as an address to Victory, as Antonianus was an athlete). His nickname (ὁ Μῶρος, 'the stupid') may suggest that he was a boxer who has suffered from the blows to his head (Gouw), but Robinson interprets it as an African name. Died in Cyrene, possibly whilst attending a festival. His nickname might have found its origins in his illness (dementia pugilistica) possibly caused by the many hits he received practising his combat-oriented discipline. On his tomb he is depicted with laurels and his dog Parégoris (Gouw). |
