According to Farrington (2012), this athlete was probably active somewhere between c. 215 and c. 250. This athlete held at least three Olympian victories and was active in stadion and pentathlon. Weir (2004) indicates that the inscription was probably set up somewhere after 229. - YP
Twice in the Hadrianeia Demetrios ended with ex-aequo, Gouw presumes in the pentathlon-discipline. Nevertheless, Demetrios recorded this result as a victory. Demetrios attained over 47 citizenships in different cities during his career. Moretti (1957) claims the five Olympic victories were attained in Olympia, Gouw (2009) claims Anazarbos (as Demetrios' monument stands there), as does Robert (1968), stating that if Demetrios had competed after 212, he should have been called Aurelius Demetrios, and not simply Demetrios; furthermore, since in the list of Demetrios' victories there are no races more recent than those established in honour of Commodus, the inscription should not be later than the age of that emperor. And since in the lists of Julius Africanus there is no Demetrios of Salamis as the winner of the stadium race in Olympia throughout the 2nd century, Demetrios of Salamis should be expunged from the list of Olympians. Moretti (1992) still holds to his assessment of Olympia over Anazarbos.
