Comment: The athlete's name is handed down in the sources both as Stratonikos (Eusebius, Africanus) and as Straton (Pausanias, Aelian). Aelian relates an interesting story about him: Straton came from a wealthy family, but as a result of refusing to exercise he fell ill. In order to treat it, he needed to work out. When doing so, he became exceedingly good, and therefore went on to compete at the games. (Ael., VH 4.15) - CT
