After local victories, Asklepiades traded in his trainer Aurelius Neikias for Aurelius Leonidas in order to win larger festivals (Gouw). Robert (1976) argues his Olympic 'victories' only attest to him passing the preliminary tests in Olympia (hence κριθένται), but Asklepiades was a citizen of Elis, an honour only reserved for Olympic victors (Moretti, 1992).
